D-Panthenol is a provitamin of B5, also known as pantothenic acid.  In fact when B5 is applied to the skin it converts to panthoenic acid which works as a humectant by infusing water in to the cells.   It's a small molecule which means it is easily absorbed by the skins upper layers.   By increasing and regulating the hydration capacity of the skin, it has a moisturising, plumping and smoothing effect and helps the skin to retain moisture deep within the tissues.  It helps to prevent hyperkeratinisation which is a cause of blocked pores which can lead to acne.  It also stimulates cell formation in the repair and renewal process so supports wound healing and the regeneration of the skin.  Vitamin B5 is also necessary for fatty acid synthesis which support a healthy barrier function.
Clinical studies have shown that topical application quickly penetrates the upper layers of the skin and aids in tissue repair, dramatically reducing healing time.  It is a very skin friendly ingredient which is well tolerated by even sensitive skins.
