Coenzyme Q10, also called Ubiquinone, is a nutrient that is naturally present in every cell of your body.  It is essential to cell functioning, cell division and cell regeneration because it helps with the synthesis of ATP, our cellular energy production. 
Coenzyme Q10 is an essential component of healthy mitochondrial function. Mitochondria are known as the powerhouses of the cell as they produce energy rich molecules for our cells.  This is important because ageing is basically a decline in mitochondrial function whereby everything starts to slow down at a cellular level.  So increasing the amount of ATP available gives an energy boost to the skin and helps it to function more like youthful skin. 
We have Coenzyme Q10 in our cells and also our surface skin lipids but our natural levels decline as we age.  By the time you are in your 40's you will have about half the amount of this nutrient that you had in your 20's. Stress will also lower levels of CoQ10, as will UV exposure and pollution.  If levels fall below optimium it results in the skin being less able to produce collagen, elastin and other important skin molecules required for healthy skin.
CoQ10 is a fat soluble antioxidant so it  helps prevent free radical damage to the skin's surface lipids, proteins and cellular DNA which makes it an important anti ageing enzyme.  Applying Coenzyme Q10 topically will improve the antioxidative capacity of the epidermis, helping to neutralise free radicals and keep cells in the skin healthy.  As it has a small molecule it can penetrate in to skin cells relatively eaily.  Studies have shown that topical treatment with CoQ10 can increase levels within the skin.
